Baby #2: Week 38!

Week 38

Baby Changes:

Your baby has really plumped up. He weighs about 6.8 pounds and he's over 19 1/2 inches long (like a leek). He has a firm grasp, which you'll soon be able to test when you hold his hand for the first time! His organs have matured and are ready for life outside the womb. Wondering what color your baby's eyes will be? You many not be able to tell right away. If he's born with brown eyes, they'll likely stay brown. If he's born with steel gray or dark blue eyes, they may stay gray or blue or turn green, hazel, or brown by the time he's 9 months old. That's because a child's irises (the colored part of the eye) may gain pigment in the months after he's born, but they usually won't get "lighter" or more blue.  (Green, hazel, and brown eyes have more pigment than gray or blue eyes.)

Best moment this week: definitely Saturday! I got to get a massage, manicure, and pedicure at La Bella Belly Spa in Rockwall and then that night Casey & I went to the staff Christmas party at Patti Womack's house where I stuffed myself with lots of delicious food and had a great time talking with friends! :)

Gender: Boy! Dayton Lee Coats

Movement: a lot less at the beginning of the week, but seems to be more active the last couple of days!

Food cravings: Besides ice, the other night we were all talking about steak at CG and afterwards I was craving meat so Casey went to Sonic and got some food for me at 9:45pm :) Sweet husband :)

What I am looking forward to: having him!!!!!

Symptoms: Oh my gosh…this week has gotten bad people. I am having a lot of pain down low and lots of pressure, too. I have basically limped around the last couple of days. It feels like someone is grabbing me by the tops of my legs and trying to pull me apart like a wishbone. I did NOT have this feeling with Sawyer and I even hear some "popping" when I sit down or move - like bones popping. It is awful and it hurts! It is really bad at night when I am laying in bed a try to turn over to my other side. Apparently there is something called Symphysis Pubic Dysfunction where the hormone called Relaxin can allow your ligaments to get too stretchy and too lose too soon. I think I may have this. It is an odd feeling and very disconcerting to say the least. I go to the doctor again tomorrow and plan to ask all about it! I am also still having to use the bathroom constantly and have acid reflux. Hey, at least my back doesn't hurt!!

Doctor's appointment: On Monday (12/17) I was dilated to 3cm still and he said I was 80% effaced and that the baby's head was "fully engaged" (no joke, I can tell!). My blood pressure was only 112/76 and Dayton's heart rate was 140. I hadn't gained a pound this week so I am still at 26 pounds for the entire pregnancy (quite proud of myself for this, although I didn't really do anything to prevent gaining too much weight). I plan to ask to weigh before and after I have the baby (if I can remember). :) I'm at 144 lbs now. I bet I hit 145, at least, haha. The doctor said "could be anytime" and almost seemed like he thought he wouldn't see before my next appointment which is tomorrow (only 3 days later due to the holidays), but it looks like he'll be wrong. :( I'll be 39 weeks tomorrow and he's willing to induce at that point, but we're still gonna hold out. Kind of not liking that anymore, but oh well. :) I think it's best to try to let him come on his own since there is nothing wrong with either of us (no health problems that create a reason to induce), and I want to try to do this without an epidural, but I know the likelihood of me succeeding with that goal will go way down if I'm given Pitocin (because that makes the contractions way harder, and mine aren't so bad -- or at least they weren't with Sawyer!).

If you think about it, you can say a little prayer for me & Dayton: that he would be completely healthy; that labor would be smooth and no complications; that Sawyer would adjust well; (and if you're feeling extra prayerful that he would come soon and we'd be home by Christmas ;)

TO DO:
  1. finish Christmas shopping (only have a FEW items left to go)
  2. wrap remainder of Christmas presents
  3. write my last couple of thank you cards
  4. hang the bookshelves in the nursery (they have arrived!)
  5. pack my hospital bag
  6. pack a few presents for Sawyer to give to her at the hospital
  7. finish up my schoolwork: 2 papers due 12/12/12
  8. take my defensive driving paperwork to the courthouse as soon as it arrives in the mail
  9. wash Dayton's newborn clothes
  10. charge the video camera/camera
  11. write in Dayton's baby book
  12. get both cars washed/cleaned out
  13. install car seats/infant car seat
Here's my 38 week picture taken at 38 weeks, 2 days.
And for some reason this angle/side looks smaller :)
Hurry up, Dayton!!!

Dayton's Nursery!

We have finally finished Dayton's nursery!!! I love the way it turned out! It's pretty much exactly how I pictured it :) I wanted to use turquoise and other bright colors with gray and black. I also wanted it to be a "travel theme" so we used cars, trucks, vespas (like a moped), a hot air balloon, a bicycle, a skateboard, maps, road signs, and other car paraphernalia! :)
Here are a few before shots of some of the furniture and the room before it was cleared out…
The ugly dresser drawers
the room

I knew I wanted gray walls, but wanted to do something cool on at least one wall, so I looked endlessly at pictures online to find the right board and batten for the room! Here is a sneak peek of what it looked like after Casey & Charlie put it up, but before it got painted (so that's why it looks dirty - because it is!)
They did a great job! Thanks to Charlie for all the help on this!
Okay, now for some finished project photos! :)
I ordered the crib from Target, but we redid all of the other furniture!
I got the glider/ottoman online and painted it and got it reupholstered…and I bought the old table/lamp combo at a garage sale and painted it and added a new shade! :)
{The first picture's coloring is more accurate}
The handmade quilt on the side of the crib is from the Allen ladies - they made one for Sawyer, too, and we love them both!!
The cars pillow and sheet is from Lauren Stevenson from a place called Dwell Studio. Love them!
The mobile is from Carters and the blanket is from Target!
I love the collage! Casey & I had it laid out on the floor the way we liked for a while, but were too scared to hang it up, so Ginni came over and hung it up for us! It was a lot of help! Casey and I get pretty frustrated with each other when we start hanging pictures…we can never get it just right, haha! Ginni's pretty good at eyeballing something before hammering ;) Thanks friend!! (She also ironed the curtains and wanted to vacuum, but I put a stop there ;) Perfectionist?)
Most of the prints are from Etsy, but the upper left and the upper right are real photographs from a garage sale where the lady took pictures a while back around Dallas! You can see on the left that it's an old sign that says "Speed Limit 5 mph." The orange one is the ferris wheel at the fair that she just changed the color on! :) Also, that's an actual VW hubcap at the bottom that Charlie & Ginni found! The upper blue one on the right is an actual photograph that Casey's parents took in Dayton, TX of the football stadium! Then the remaining ones say "hello world" (under the globe), under the bicycle it says "I would go anywhere with you," there's a watercolor of an old VW van, then a picture of Dayton, OH with the latitude & longitude of the city, and the last one says "Eat Well Travel Often." LOVE them all!!
The banner is the one that was hanging at my baby shower made out of pages from old children's books!
I love the "floating books" - they are just clear bookshelves…and we added the skateboard on top--still considering putting the word "books" on it or something, but that's not real original, haha.
I got the lamp base from Target for only $9.99 after selling a lamp I already had for $10…score! ;)
a close up of the print on the table/lamp--more of the "travel" theme
The cars in the jar were all Casey's from when he was a little boy :)
There's actually one in there that I kept from my 16th birthday…It's a Mustang and my dad tricked me that morning telling me there was a surprise for me in the driveway and I run out the door to find all the cars moved and just this little toy car in the driveway. Funny joke, but mean! Haha. I did get my Mustang 6 months later, so I can't complain ;)
books given to us at Dayton's shower (and some we already had)
 Vespas (mopeds)
I got an old, ugly dresser at an Estate Sale for cheap! We repainted it turquoise and added new hardware! Casey could not see my vision for this piece when I bought it, but now he loves it ;) And he did all the work on it, so he should! :)
Oh, and all of the drawer space is awesome!!
I love these hooks from Hobby Lobby…The Ford one on the left is my favorite, but Casey's is the SS 350…I had never heard of that before, but apparently it's a Chevy Super Sport! (Who knew?!)
I love the little dinosaur jacket and cute hat waiting for Dayton :)
Another old photograph from the lady that took pictures around Dallas…I think it's a Vespa or scooter (not sure which) …and who knows what the Elbow Room is??! Haha. Any guesses on what year that was taken? Or where that location is? I don't know, but it looks old and I know it's somewhere in Dallas.
So there it is! Dayton's nursery debut!! :)
We can't wait to bring him home and let him see the room we prepared just for him :) There is something about decorating a room with a specific baby in mind that is so sweet and special to me. I love both Sawyer & Dayton's rooms and hope they do/will, too! :)

Baby #2: Week 37!

The weeks are ticking by and baby Dayton is already full-term!

Week 37

Baby Changes: Your baby is now considered "full term" even though your due date is 3 weeks away. If you go into labor now his lungs will  likely be mature enough to adjust to life outside the womb. Some babies need a bit more time, though.

Your baby weighs around 6 1/3 pounds and measures a bit over 19 inches, head to heel (like a stalk of Swiss chard). Many babies have a full head of hair at birth, with locks from 1/2 inch to 1 1/2 inches long. Don't be surprised if your baby's hair isn't the same color as yours. Dark-haired couples are sometimes thrown for a loop when their children come out as blondes or red-heads, and fair-headed couples have been surprised by Elvis look-alikes! And then of course some babies sport on peach fuzz.

Best moment this week: This has been a fun week! I had my last day at my internship on Friday, pokeno with the girls on Friday night, CG party at Charlie & Ginni's on Saturday night, my doctor appointment on Monday (with some good news!), and then our 4th annual time to go looking at Christmas lights with the Rickersons on Monday night!

Gender: Boy! I still can't wrap my mind around having a boy. I feel like such a girl mom.

Movement: his movement has slowed wayyyy down. I guess there's just not enough room! The doctor told me to count to make sure there are at least 10 different, distinct movements within my first 2 hours of being awake each morning.

Food Cravings: funny story…I've been craving ice like crazy and that's a sign of anemia (so is low blood pressure and fatigue and I've been having both) so I started taking more of my prenatal vitamins hoping to up my iron. Well, last week my friend Kristin and her family came over for dinner and she saw my gummy prenatal vitamins sitting on the counter. She was like "hey, I use those, too! Did you know they don't have iron in them?" I about freaked out. She showed me on the label where it said they don't contain iron because they are gummy and children may want to eat them (too much iron is really dangerous in children). UGH! So this entire pregnancy I've been anemic and also not taking any iron. The next day I went to the store and got an Iron supplement and have been taking it everyday. I've still been craving ice though…but maybe not as much? It's hard to tell. I'm not worried about how it will affect the baby though because I took the same vitamins my entire pregnancy with Sawyer and she's fine, although I never craved ice with her.

What I am looking forward to: checking things off of my to do list and then just having him!! :)

Symptoms: I have a multitude of "symptoms": acid reflux (it's pretty much a constant companion now), having to use the bathroom religiously (at night & during the day), craving and eating lots of ice, lots of pressure and pain down low.

Doctor's appointment: At my 37 week, 4 day doctor's appointment I was dilated to 3cm already! Woohoo! He wasn't going to examine me at all, but last week I had contractions off and on for several hours and have been cramping this week as well so he decided to go ahead and check, and sure enough progress had been made! My blood pressure was 127/74 (again the highest it's ever been, but still considered good and low). Dayton's heart rate was 130, so that's slowed down some. I had gained 2 pounds in 1 week, now weighing 144 lbs total. I have only gained 26 pounds so far this pregnancy which astounds me since I gained 33 with Sawyer and I'm only 5 days out from when I had her at this point. (I started at 115 with her and got to about 148). I started off 3 pounds heavier this pregnancy, but it looks like I might end it lighter! That would be nice! I already have some plans for losing this baby weight quick (breastfeeding + running/lifting = a winning combination!).

TO DO:

  1. finish Christmas shopping (only have a FEW items left to get)
  2. wrap remainder of Christmas presents
  3. write my last couple of thank you cards (I didn't write thank you cards with Sawyer until after she was born, ha!)
  4. hang the bookshelves in the nursery when they arrive
  5. pack my hospital bag
  6. wrap/pack a few presents for Sawyer to give to her while we are in the hospital
  7. finish up my school work (have 2 papers due today at 4:30pm on 12/12/12)
  8. take my defensive driving paperwork to the courthouse as soon as it arrives in the mail
  9. wash Dayton's newborn clothes
  10. charge the video camera/camera
  11. write in Dayton's baby book
  12. get both cars washed/cleaned out
  13. install car seat base/infant car seat (this is so much easier now that I've done it before…last time it seemed like SUCH a task, haha!)
I'm pretty much done with all things major…his room is complete (minus the bookshelves). His pack-n-play napper/bassinet is put together and next to me in our bedroom (thanks to Casey!), the pets are in new homes, and I'm not nearly as concerned about having all his clothes washed in "baby-safe detergent." Things are just simpler the second time around and I feel more relaxed (besides being nervous about having 2 kids under 20 months!) ;)

Here is my 37 week picture! Last time I wore this with Sawyer at 38 weeks so you can kind of compare HERE :)
It won't be too much longer now!! :)

:::Going from ONE to TWO:::

These last few days I have just been feeling like soaking Sawyer up as much as possible. I am super excited about Dayton being born and think she is going to love him (maybe after a little time:) and be a great big sister. However, there are definitely moments where I think "aw, she won't remember when it was just the 2 of us at home" (me staying at home with her - obviously I know there are 3 people in our family :) and I think of that, too. "Aw, she won't remember bed time with just me & Casey doting all over her with no one else to care for.") I know she will always have that special first born child thing going on, but I'm also not a fan of sibling rivalry or anyone feeling they are the favorite (unless they all feel that way;) so I know I am going to try to super hard to give all of my children each their own momma time and momma/daddy time--and also build them up with their individual, unique characteristics and gifts. I do think maybe we are at an advantage right now with having a boy and a girl so that they are so different that they don't feel as much competition, but at the same time I am so worried about one feeling like the other is favored. Maybe this is because I am an only child?? I just want all of my children to think we love and adore them SO much and not worry about how much we love the others, etc. I think we're going to end up with 3 kids (adopting the 3rd is in our near plans) and I know that automatically outnumbers us. Because of that I think there has to be extra diligence taken.

Oh my, the worries of motherhood. I'm just glad my motherhood worries consist of how much love everyone is going to get and not how I'm going to feed my babies or worries about health issues and finances. We are so blessed and I cannot wait to bring Dayton into this world. Until then, I am SOAKING SAWYER UP. She is SO much fun and I am LOVING this stage. She has no idea how much she is loved and I pray that she always feels it. We already have ideas and plans to keep her feeling the love after Dayton arrives.

I have been reading her books about having a little brother, telling her the she is having a little brother, and I got her so many little doll accessories for Christmas that coincide with Dayton's stuff…like a little doll car seat/carrier to carry around her own baby, a little backpack type thing (like a baby bjorn) to carry around her baby when she sees me carry Dayton in a sling, doll diapers and a little doll diaper bag with a pacifier, comb, and car keys. My grandma also got her a little doll cradle. I think she is going to love it all and love doing things with her baby as I do things with Dayton. :) Not sure how she'll mimic or know what to do about the breastfeeding part, but we'll cross that bridge when we get to it, haha! :) We also already talked about Casey taking her to get breakfast once or twice a month - just him and her. And I know that she and I will have to take advantage of brother's many naps. I will have to get creative with some not-too-noisy activities for us to do. I already know that she LOVES drawing so I got her a coloring book that uses water - I know she'll like that. We also got her a magna doodle that has a pen to draw. She seriously LOVES drawing. It's cute :)

Anyway, I am excited AND nervous about being a mother of two - but I know it is going to be so much fun (especially after we get both kids sleeping through the night… for Sawyer that was hit or miss from 4-6 months old and then really good at 7 months. Maybe Dayton will be a little better) ;) Once he can interact with her more I know things are going to get really good. She already loves babies (real or fake) and I think she will adore her little bro. I know having a second baby is whole new territory for every mom, but it is even more so for me because I am an only child!! What is it like to have a brother or a sister?! I have no idea. PLUS, to have them within 20 months of each other!!! They are only going to be 2 grades apart (senior and sophomore) and less than 2 years apart! So weird. I am excited though! I have always wanted a "big" family and to me, having more than 1 child already feels like a big family! I am loving the thought of it. :) Yay! For Casey this is old news I guess. He was kind of in Dayton's shoes… he has a big sister who is 3 years old than him and 3 grades apart (senior and freshman) so it was a little more spread out, but he still knows what it was like to have an older sister!

Anyway, thanks for "listening" to my ramblings. I just thought I should blog about it so I don't forget these thoughts later. I know life is so fleeting and time is flying by. I don't want to forget how I feel in these last few days/weeks leading up to having my second born child -- the first born boy! Yay Dayton, we are excited to meet you! We love you already :)

Baby #2: Weeks 35 & 36!

I'm behind again, but I've got good reason….I've been busy :)

Week 35

Baby Changes: Your baby doesn't have much more room to maneuver now that he's over 18 inches long and tips the scales at 5 1/4 pounds (pick up a honeydew melon). Because it's so snug in your womb, he isn't likely to be doing somersaults anymore, but the number of times he kicks should remain the same. His kidneys are fully developed now, and his liver can process some waste products. Most of his basic physical development is now complete--he'll spend the next few weeks putting on weight!

Best moment this week: girls' night seeing Breaking Dawn part 2! It was nice to get out and spend some time having fun with my girlfriends! Casey & I also had a date night! We went to Gloria's for dinner and then to see Lincoln at the Harbor - very good movie! This was our first date night alone in more than a month so it was nice to get to relax together! My mom even kept Sawyer overnight so the next day I got to sleep in before picking her up for church! Woohoo!

Gender: He's still a boy! I got a sonogram this week at my doctor's appointment and the doctor confirmed for me, again, that he is a boy. Just checkin' ;)

Movement: still a kicker!!!

Food cravings: ICE! It's so weird, but I have been eating ice like the refrigerator is about to break down.

What I am looking forward to: Getting the collage up in the nursery!

Symptoms: acid reflux is still the devil and so is getting up over and over at night to use the bathroom.
35 week picture!

Week 36

Baby Changes: Your baby is still packing on the pounds--at the rate of about an ounce a day! He now weighs almost 6 pounds (like a crenshaw melon) and is more than 18 1/2 inches long. He's shedding most of the downy covering of hair that covered his body as well as the vernix caseosa, the waxy substance that covered and protected his skin nine-month amniotic bath. Your baby swallows both of these substances, along with other secretions, resulting in a blackish mixture, called meconium, which will form the contents of his first bowel movement.
At the end of the week your baby will be considered full-term.  (Full term is 37-42 weeks; babies born before 37 weeks are pre-term and those born after 42 weeks are post-term).
According to my doctor, Dayton is already in the head-down position.

Best moment this week: Going to 3 different Thanksgiving celebrations! We went to my mom's side at my Momma Sheila's house on the morning of Thanksigiving and then to my dad's side at my cousin Cindy's house that afternoon. Saturday we went to Casey's mom's side at his grandmother's house! We had good food and fun at all :) Also, I took Sawyer to her first little girl Christmas party - she decorated cookies, did a book exchange, and played. She had so much fun (and so did I)!

Gender: Boy! Dayton Lee Coats!

Movement: movements have slowed to kicks instead of crazy all over the place changes, but he is still way more active than Sawyer ever was!

Food cravings: ICE just about beats all other cravings. It's weird.

What I am looking forward to: having the baby?! I feel like most everything has come together! The nursery only lacks minor details and the pack-n-play bassinet is put together in our room! I'm ready!!

Symptoms: ACID REFLUX, grrrr. Also, one night this week I got up SIX times to use the bathroom. You've got to be kidding me!

At my 36 week, 4 day appointment my blood pressure was 120/80 and  I had gained 1 lb in the last 2 weeks, now weighing in at 142 lbs. Dayton's heart rate was 145. I was not dilated or effaced at all, which was kind of a bummer since I was at my 36 week appointment with Sawyer (at 36 weeks with her I was 2 cm dilated and 50% effaced already!). Everything is still going well and both Dayton and I are still healthy as horses!
My 36 week picture!

Sawyer @ 19 months

Our big girl is 19 months! Can't believe it!!! The time is a flying'…
  • Sawyer is a funny little girl! She makes us laugh all day whether it's her silly dancing (she knows how to do so many different kinds of dances it's unreal, haha) or her running out of the room continuously yelling "bye!" with her hand behind her back waving to us, or her peek-a-boo's with her blankie! She is so sweet and we love her to death. We think she is going to be such a sweet big sister because she already adores babies and holds her arms out to hold them. We were in Wal-mart not long ago when she saw a baby in a car seat and started yelling "baby! baby!" so we finally took the cart over there just so she could see. Haha. If zoo's were filled with babies, I think she'd enjoy that more than the animals. :)
  • Sawyer still loves Elmo and watches Sesame Street a few times a week. She dances to the music they play and will smile when Elmo comes on the screen. Every time I grab the remote she starts saying "Elmo? Elmo?" It's cute and makes me feel bad if I don't put it on Elmo. Haha.
  • She still loves playing with her dolls and feeds them with her little doll bottles and pushes them around in her little doll stroller.
  • Sawyer adores Casey and loves to rough-house with him. He throws on the bed, chases her around the house, gives her pony-rides, and hangs her upside down. She loves it all!
  • We think Sawyer is already a little athletic! Haha! She LOVES to kick or throw any type of ball and has actually gotten quite good at it! She gets this funny determined face that we laugh at. It's cute:)
  • Sawyer still loves Lucy and says "ruff!" anytime she barks. She also goes over to her and gives her hugs and lets Lucy lick her hand (although I wish she wouldn't do that part, haha). She likes Ella, too, but usually abuses her so I have to hold Sawyer back so Ella can escape, with her tail still in tact!!
  • Sawyer still loves to go outside and I feel badly for her when it is cold out because she will say "outside? outside?" and it's just too cold to let her go run around out there. I'll be looking forward to better weather for my toddler.
  • She is still a momma's girl and I enjoy it :) When it comes to bedtime she wants me and will push Casey away. It is kind of funny!  He knows she loves him, though :) She freaks out when he comes home - always standing at the back door when she hears the garage open saying "DA DA!!!" :)
  • Sawyer is still a fan of bath time. She loves splashing around and playing with all of her little squirt toys. She also has a bath book that she "reads" every time she's in the tub.
  • Sawyer runs, skips (in a funny sort of way), walks backwards, turns in circles, and does somersaults. She is very active physically. She hardly ever just wants to sit still (unless she is tired or doesn't feel well).
  • She now gives hugs & kisses on demand - I LOVE THIS of course ;)
  • She is in size 3 diapers and mostly 18 month clothing. She wears size 4 or 5 shoe (depending on the brand). She is around 32 inches tall (maybe a little taller than that - that was last month's measurement) and I'm guessing around 22 pounds or so, but that's a total guess! She still has 16 teeth, but has been cutting some more in the back for a couple weeks now - it has resulted in some not-fun diapers…hoping they break through soon.
  • She names many different body parts…nose, hair, teeth, eyes, ears, mouth, feet, toes, belly button, hands, knees, etc. She has also started taking off her clothes and putting them back on - not always successfully, but pretty close :) She is obsessed with her shoes. If there are some laying around she WILL bring them to me to put on her. And lately she tries herself and insists in walking around with them half-on/half-off and on the wrong feet. :)
  • The vocabulary boom has been fun!! She will try to mimic most words I tell her, but I don't put them under her "current words list" until she says them on her own ;)

Sawyer's current words (around 40 or so and I'm sure I'm leaving some off):
  1. Momma
  2. no (she has stopped saying this as much – thank goodness!:)
  3. Dada
  4. Daddy
  5. Lucy
  6. dog
  7. ruff!
